The position will mainly involve the isolation of human and animal influenza viruses from clinical samples into cell lines and hens eggs and the characterisation of these viruses. Virus isolates that are obtained will be characterised by the applicant using various serological and molecular techniques.
About you:
Applicants with experience in tissue culture and virus isolation (in cell lines and/or hens eggs) are encouraged to apply. Experience in standard Molecular Biology/Molecular Virology techniques including DNA/RNA purification, real time and conventional RT-PCR, Sanger sequencing and standard bioinformatics programs would be well considered as would experience with serological techniques such as haemagglutination and haemagglutination inhibition assays.
The successful candidate must be able to work independently and also as part of a team and have strong attention to detail. They must also be well organised, self motivated, have a high standard of record keeping skills, knowledge of NATA or ISO 15189/17025 working environments and a working knowledge of Microsoft programs (Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Access) and have good communication and teamwork skills.
